Senior Adult Ministry (SAM)

Senior Adult Ministry (SAM) is designed for people aged fifty-five and over.


SAM has monthly potlucks September through the following May. One of our mission outreach activities is a partnership SAM has with Second Harvest Food Bank.We also offer a series of hikes in the spring and fall that are very popular.

In addition, we also have opportunities to remember SAM members at home in June and December.


The fellowship in the SAM Family is something to partake in. Become a part of the family!

  • SAM Potlucks/Special Events

    The potluck season starts in September with a themed catered meal and speaker/entertainer. 


    In December, we have our Christmas Party again with a catered meal and special entertainment. 


    Attendees bring their favorite dishes to the remaining potlucks. Folks are also encouraged to bring non-perishable food to The Empty Table which benefits the Extended Hands Pantry. 


    Here are the 2025 potluck dates:

    February 26, March 26, April 30, May 28, September 24, October 29, November 19, and December 17. 


    Be sure to wear your SAM shirt!


  • SAM at Second Harvest Food Bank

    We meet at SHFB two Mondays a month, usually every other Monday. 


    It is common to have 12-16 SAMies volunteer for each session. This is a sitting position with some volunteers unloading pallets, delivering products, and building outbound pallets of product. We meet at 12:15 pm to sign in and learn what we will be doing that day. We stop for RECESS (!) at 2:00 pm with a homemade treat. Our day is complete by 3:30 pm. You go home tired, but you will feel good from the fellowship and knowing you helped some special people fighting food insecurity. 


    This is a very popular SAM outreach ministry.

  • Virtual Apple Pie Sale in November

    This November SAM will hold their 7th Annual Virtual Pie Sale. 


    The sale will benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank and the food pantry at Christ the Shepherd Church in Altadena, California.


     This sale is very unique as every dollar raised will be multiplied four times! So a $10 donation will actually become $40. 


    It is never too early to set aside your loose change for the sale that starts November 1st. 

  • Spring Hike Season is Coming

    It will not be long before Barb and Walt Herrod announce the Spring 2025 SAM Hike Schedule. 


    Spring is right around the corner. That is Walt Herrod in the front in the dark orange shirt. 


    We have 12-20 SAMies on each hike. Sometimes we stay after the hike and enjoy lunch together. Barb is the photographer and usually brings up the rear—keeping all the ducklings together!

  • Day Tours

    SAM usually offers two trips a year. 


    We kick off the start of summer with a June trip. Then we alternate with either an October fall color tour or a Christmas tour in late November or early December.


    For 2025, SAM offers the Winnebago and Wine Tour on June 18. 


    SAM’s Cheesy Yodeling Tour is in development for October.
