Children's Ministry

Welcome to Children and Family Ministry at Messiah! We are so glad you are here! Our goal at Messiah is to create and maintain fellowship among families, create meaningful opportunities for families to participate in worship, and to educate children about the love God has for all people, as well as the love God teaches us to have for each other.  We want families to feel free to get involved in the way that works best for them. We offer a variety of educational and support services! Please reach out to Brittany to learn more or with any questions you may have!

  • Sunday Nursery

Our nursery is staffed every Sunday for both the 8:15 and 10:30 services.

Our nursery attendants provide developmentally appropriate care and activities for children ages 6 weeks to 6 years in our nursery (located in the lower level Education wing).

We have a secure sign in and parent pagers are provided.

  • Sunday School - 3 years - 4th Grade

Children 3 years to 4th grade are invited to join us for Sunday School! Our Sunday School curriculum teaches children more about many of the Bible stories they hear during services. Throughout the years children can spend in Sunday School, we explore almost 80 different stories, from Genesis to Paul’s letters, through read- alouds, discussions, hands-on activities, and creative play.  We also teach lessons related to the special seasons in the church such as Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter.

Our children are placed  into age-level groups so that they learn in the most developmentally appropriate environment and have the opportunity to create and maintain lasting relationships with their peers. While our lessons are rooted in scripture, our main focus is to teach children about the love and acceptance God has for all people and to help children learn to follow in the footsteps of the divine. To that end, we also reinforce the messages that our pastors preach in their sermons.

Sunday School runs from mid-September to early May and follows the traditional school year schedule. Sunday School runs from 9:15-10:20 AM.

  • Children's Choir

All children and youth are invited to join our Children’s Choir!

Children’s Choir takes place at the beginning of Sunday School starting at 9:15 AM.

Children practice weekly and perform a variety of songs during our Sunday Services and during our annual Christmas Program.

Those not wanting to be part of the Children's Choir but want to come to Sunday School should arrive at 9:30AM.

  • Bible Gift and Blessing

At Messiah we want our children to learn about the love of God and have access to the message even when they are not at church.

Each year, 3rd grade students are invited to receive a Bible of their own and are taught how to navigate it.

Third Grade students enrolled in Sunday School will automatically have access to this learning, but all children 8 years and older are invited to receive a Bible and have access to the lessons either by joining us for a few weeks or engaging in lessons at home!

If you are interested in learning more please email cfm@messiahchurch.com

  • Christmas Program & Birthday Party for Jesus

Every year our Sunday School Students, along with the help of many volunteers, act out the story of the birth of Jesus for our congregation. The children serve as the actors, choir and the backstage crew.

Following the play all are welcome to join us for cake as we celebrate and are invited to contribute to our collection of baby items for a local food pantry.

  • First Communion Instruction

While all are welcome to receive communion at Messiah and parents/guardians may decide the appropriate time for their children to receive, our second grade students receive special instruction about the significance of communion and what it represents.

All second graders enrolled in Sunday School have this instruction embedded in their curriculum. However, all children (regardless of enrollment in Sunday School as well as older children who are interested) have access to this instruction! We recognize all that the children have learned and celebrate their faith milestone by having children take their first communion with their families during worship in early May. Please reach out to cfm@messiahchurch.com to learn more.

  • First Communion Celebration

The First Communion Celebration will take place on April 27, 2025 at the 10:30 service.

  • Children & Youth Summer Camp at Sugar Creek Bible Camp!

Following in the footsteps of Christ calls us to find balance between service, rest, and reflection, and we know the great impact retreats and outdoor ministry have for our faith and growth.

Throughout a child's time at Messiah, they will have the opportunity to participate in retreats and camps, giving them, and sometimes their parents/guardians, the opportunity to unplug from their normal routines (and their phones). During these faith-centered community experiences, they will build relationships with new people and participate in activities both familiar and new, and have fun while doing it all!

Every summer, your child can join Pastor Dan and others for a week of overnight camp at Sugar Creek Bible Camp! This camp offers age specific programming ranging from two nights to five nights for ages 5 through 18 years old! Although spending a week away from home and family can be hard, it is a challenge and an opportunity for children to grow and learn about themselves in new ways as they experience God's love for them, for community, and for creation!

If you are interested in participating in, volunteering with, or supporting Messiah's outdoor ministry opportunities, or if you want to learn more, please contact Pastor Dan (pastordan@messiahchurch.com) for more information!
