Family Ministry

We are so fortunate to have a wide variety of ways you and your family can connect with others here at Messiah.

Families come in all forms and sizes, and we know how busy life can become. That’s why Messiah offers a wide variety of ways that you and your family can discover, connect with and be supported by community.

Our family programming and events are open to the whole family. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, friends (the family we choose) and others are all invited to participate.

We host several events each year including social events held at Messiah, camping off-site at area Lutheran camps and the celebration of faith milestones like receiving a Bible, First Communion and Confirmation.

While many people choose to participate in the Children Ministry, Youth Ministry, Senior Adult Ministry and Women’s Ministry groups, you do not have to belong to any of those groups to attend Family Events.

The best way to be informed if you do not belong to those groups is to watch the Weekly News and Events tab.

  • Legend of Old Befana - January 12, 2025

Save the Date for a Free Family Ministry Epiphany Adventure: The Legend of Old Befana with Ken Lonnquist and Friends

If you came last year, come again as this year’s performance will have a full cast with more songs, movement and dance!

Sunday January 12th starting at 11:30, after the late service. Have a pizza lunch at 11:30 and join us for a musical story at noon.

Sign up on the kiosk or email Elizabeth at volunteer@messiahchurch.com. Tell us how many are coming so we have enough food.

If you can bring a dozen small treats such as mini cupcakes, pound cake slices, cookies, bars, etc. please let us know. You will learn in the show how integral that is to the story!

Cranky Old Befana spends her days singing, baking and sweeping, but never shares with her neighbors. One night, a splendid procession passes by and the members invite her to come with them to meet a special baby. She refuses, saying she is too busy, but later reconsiders. She spends the night getting ready and sets out, but the procession is long gone. Ever since then, Befana has been searching for this special child. On the night of the Epiphany, she visits children everywhere. She sweeps their room, sings them a lullaby and leaves them a treat because she doesn't know who the special child is. It might be…you!

This event is suitable for all ages, especially young kids who will be able to sit on the floor or in a chair as it suits them. Ken Lonnquist, a well-known performer in the Madison area, created this musical version of the legendary story 37 years ago.

  • Summer Youth and Adult Boundary Water’s Canoe Trip!

  • Fall Family Camp at Bethel Horizons

Following in the footsteps of Christ calls us to find balance between service, rest, and reflection, and we know the great impact retreats and outdoor ministry have for our faith and growth.

Throughout a child's time at Messiah, they will have the opportunity to participate in retreats and camps, giving them, and sometimes their parents/guardians, the opportunity to unplug from their normal routines (and their phones). During these faith-centered community experiences, they will build relationships with new people and participate in activities both familiar and new, and have fun while doing it all!

In the fall, Messiah hosts a Family Camp Weekend where children of all ages are encouraged to join us at Bethel Horizons Camp with parents/guardians/grand-

parents in order to be in community and experience God's love in an outdoor, and apart from home, setting. It is a “choose your own adventure” weekend where you can come for the full overnight experience or come for just the day!

If you are interested in participating in, volunteering with, or supporting Messiah's outdoor ministry opportunities, or if you want to learn more, please contact Pastor Dan (pastordan@messiahchurch.com) for more information!

Each summer, your child can join Pastor Dan and others for a week of overnight camp at Sugar Creek Bible Camp! This camp offers age specific programming ranging from two nights to five nights for ages 5 through 18 years old! Although spending a week away from home and family can be hard, it is a challenge and an opportunity for children to grow and learn about themselves in new ways as they experience God's love for them, for community, and for creation!
