Frequently Asked Questions

There are many ways to answer this question but in it’s simplest form, Lutheranism is based on the teachings of Martin Luther, a German monk and professor who has been called the “Father of the Reformation.” In 1517, he famously protested against the Roman Catholic Church and their sale of indulgences. In his sermons and writings, Luther stressed the doctrine of justification by faith alone and the authority of scripture alone. So you might say that a Lutheran is someone who believes that God’s love and life come to us freely and that scripture points us to this adventure of faith.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is one of the largest Christian denominations in the United States, with about 4 million members in nearly 10,000 congregations across the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

We are the church that shares a living, daring confidence in God’s grace. For us, as the ELCA, this faith comes through the good news of Jesus Christ and gives us the freedom and the courage to wonder, discover and boldly participate in what God is up to in the world.

To be a member of the church is to be part of a family of faith that wants to participate in the mission and ministry of Jesus – to heal and comfort, serve and care for the hurting of the world. This mission is offered to all regardless of race, color, age, economic status or sexual orientation. All people are welcomed at the table of God and the sacraments.

While we believe that Gods love can never be earned, we also believe that God nonetheless expects us to love our neighbors. A common Lutheran saying states, “God doesn’t need your good works, but your neighbor does.” We are meant to be a family of action.
